Copper or Fibre Optic ?

TechLogix Networx has published a white paper: What’s my bandwidth? When calling it “4K” isn’t enough…

This paper includes a table which shows all the different "flavours" of 4K resolution. These different variations of the 4K resolution has created a minefield for end users and integrators alike.

It has also created some creative marketing of 4K technology.

The table also shows copper based signal distribution systems limitations in bandwidth (up to 9 Gbps - Gigabits per a second) and where Fibre Optic based systems take over. Although Fibre can handle any of the bandwidth listed, it is more economical to implement a copper based system at bandwidth below 9 Gbps.

4K resolution has rapidly become available in the AV industry in the form of Flat Panel LED and OLED displays, Projectors and even Smart phones.

In saying this when considering a new signal distribution system, it is highly recommended to start considering Fibre based systems, especially if you ever are considering using 4K content @ 60 frames a second with maximum image enhancements like HDR (High Dynamic Range), Chroma Sub-Sampling and increased colour depths.

Fibre has other benefits like increased cable lengths up to a couple of thousand metres, compared to copper based systems one hundred metres.

58% of Students Can't Read Content on a 70" Flat Panel

Very interesting article that needs to be considered when designing, specifying and installing a presentation venue with large displays.

Although this is well known in the AV industry, systems are being specified with flat panel displays, due to low maintenance and increasing affordability.

Projectors are still needed and mustn't be considered "old tech" It is still the most economical solution when you require a display larger than 70 inches.

  • 1 x PTN MMX1616 Modular Matrix Switcher with various Analog and digital inputs, all scaled to HDBaseT (HDMI over CAT) outputs.
  • 1 x Kramer SL-12 Control Processor with K-Touch Android Interface.
Well done to the Salesman, System Designer and Installation team for making this project a great success.

AVC @ ISE 2015 - Sony Vision Presenter

One of the more interesting products that we saw at the ISE show in Amsterdam last week was Sony's Vision Presenter.

Basically this system allows for multiple sources to be viewed on multiple displays in a large variety of layout options.

The entire system is controlled via a Smart device (we saw being used with atablet) The system includes source mirroring, allowing you to view the source content on your smart devices.

The multi display functionality allows for single, dual or triple displays with edge blending.

To move and re-size the display sources between the three displays was a simple swipe or pinch of the tablet.

Can't wait to get my hands on one these systems.

Extron Game Changer - All-in-one AV System

Extron has recently released the DTP CrossPoint 84 IPCP, which is a All-in-one 8x4 matrix switcher, scaler, audio DSP, audio power amplifier, and control processor.

There are similar competitive products around, but the game changer for me, is the price point that Extron are bringing this to market. Similarly specified components systems are at least double the price of the DTP CrossPoint 84 IPCP.

The matrix switcher offers regular HDMI and HDMI over CAT6 inputs and outputs, for Extron DTP and XTP products. The outputs have an additional HDBaseT option for Flat Panel Displays and Projectors with HDBaseT inputs.

Add a touchpanel, Connection Panel/s, display/s and speakers and you have a very good AV system for almost any Boardroom, Training or Video Conference Room.

The only thing missing on this device, is analog display inputs. Fortunately Extron have a wide variety of scaler switcher to cater for this.

Can't wait to specify these in our AV systems.

HDMI 2.0 officially announced: 18Gbps bandwidth - 4K video here we come

It has finally happened. We now have an HDMI standard that will handle 4K video - 3,840 x 2,160 resolution (2160p)

Interesting statement from HDMI.org:
"HDMI 2.0 does not define new cables or new connectors. Current High Speed cables (Category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth."
